Event Three:
Chairman Mengistu Haile-Maraiam
In 1977, just shortly after Chairman Mengistuf Haile-Maraiam siezed power over Ethiopia, he created a land reform, which meant that all farms were to be nationalized, or cooperations. Farming was put under the control of the government for seven years until it was virtually impossible for farmer's to make profit and to survive on the little income coming in from their work. What Chairman Mengistu Haile-Maraiam did was paralyze the agicultural world and make it living on a day to day basis that much more of a struggle.
